In the market for a new dewalt impact driver? …Look no further!

The new DCF887D2 DeWALT impact driver kicks some serious ass — It’s one of the most powerful impact drivers on the market and it comes in an incredibly lightweight and compact package.

If that wasn’t enough, it is also sporting one of the lowest price tags that we’ve seen for kits like this. It’s definitely a major bang for your buck purchase. In terms of getting your money’s worth, we cannot recommend this tool enough.

We love this DeWALT impact driver so much that it has made our Best Impact Driver 2017 list.

Why are we so excited about this tool?

It’s the Top of the Line:

The DCF887D2 is the top of the line DeWALT impact driver. There are other less expensive impact drivers out there, but they aren’t nearly as impressive as this is.  This tool is definitely worth the money over some of the less expensive options.

Clocking in at 1,825 in-lbs of max-torque, the DCF887D2 is a monster. Many people have reported that the tool has snapped their 3/8″ square adaptor heads from all of the godly power.

The New Features:

Dewalt has packed this tool with increased options and features, including a new 3 speed adjustable power setting that will help for those situations when finesse is needed more than power.

It’s Compact & Lightweight:

Not only does this impact driver boast an impressive amount of torque, but the team at DeWALT managed to keep the tool at a minimal 2.2 lbs (without the battery).  This will be a major help for when you use the tool constantly for hours.

The Price:

This dewalt impact driver kit is packing some serious bang for your buck. Check out the comparison table below. It is competitive across every category while remaining the cheapest by far.

So how does it stack up?

Let’s see how the DCF887 DeWALT impact driver stacks up against its predecessor and two other favorites in the arena.

As you can see, this Dewalt Impact Driver holds up very well in almost every category.

Of these tool kits, it is the most powerful, weights the least, drives the fastest, and has the lowest price!

The only area where we feel the DCF887D2 comes up short is with the battery’s that are included in the kit. The two 2.0Ah batteries that are included pale in comparison to the two 5.0Ah batteries that the Makita and Milwaukee include.

If these batteries would be an issue for you, you could always buy the bare tool (DCF887B) and purchase better batteries separately. With top of the line batteries, this tool would have few equals.

Also, while the Makita is much more compact than the rest of the impact drivers in this list, we cannot fault the other drivers for this. It looks like the Makita has traded power for compactness with the XDT14Z.

What are the new features?

Adjustable 3 Speed Setting

Image of DCF887 Dewalt Impact Driver with 3 Adjustable Speed SettingsWith the DCF887 line, DeWALT included included the ability to change adjust the max torque settings on the tool. There are currently three settings, 250 max torque, 1,500 max torque, and 1,800 max torque. This will allow for more control in those situations when finesse is needed more than raw power.

Precision Drive:

The first and lowest setting of the tool is called Precision Drive. This is an awesome addition to my favorite tool. This drive is perfect for those situations where you need to be more careful with how you drive screws in, such as when doing kitchen cabinetry. The impact driver automatically will slow down and give additional control when driving in screws in this mode.

This new functionality has made impact drivers a better all around tool!

No Shadow LED Lights:

Image of DCF887 Dewalt Impact Driver with 3 LED Lights IlluminatedDewalt must have heard the feedback about the lighting!  Too often would obstructions block the path of light from the driver to where you needed it to be.

On the DCF887D2 Dewalt has decided to use three separate LED lights that circle the shaft of the driver.  Having multiple lights in different locations has greatly helped reduced the issue of having your light source obstructed in tight spots.

The lights illuminate for during use and remain on for 20 seconds after when the trigger was pressed last.

Lightweight & Compact:

Dewalt has managed to shave off even more weight from their impact driver.  This model weighs in at only 2.0 pounds without a battery pack!

They’ve also managed to decrease the length of the tool to only 5.3 inches! This will help with maneuvering the tool around tight spaces.

Room for Improvement

Theres really not much to compain about this tool. It exceeded our expectations and has made our Best Impact Driver 2017 list. There are however a few issues or improvements that popped out to us.

The Setting Strength:

We love the addition of the three different power settings. This will especially help those people who had trouble manually varying the power of the tool by the trigger alone.

The problem with this feature is that the 2nd and 3rd setting have a max torque that is not that really spread out from each other. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd settings top out at 250, 1,500, and 1,825 in-lbs of torque respectively. We think the tool would be much improved by having a 2nd setting that falls more in the middle of the two extremes.

The Included Batteries Could be Better:

The batteries that are included with this kit are two 2.0Ah 20V MAX XR batteries. These two batteries will perform very well, however, other manufacturers are including 5.0Ah batteries in their similar kits. The additional amphere hours will help your batteries last longer between charges. This downside is evened out by the low price of this kit in comparison to other impact drivers.

People are Reporting a Wobbly Chuck:

Many people have reported a wobbly chuck with their tools and they have had to take them in to get repaired. While we haven’t had this issue with our driver yet, we have had chuck issues with some of our DeWALT tools in the past. Hopefully DeWALT has sorted this out by now, but even if they haven’t the product is covered under a 3 year warranty with 1-year of free service.

Our Final Thoughts:

We think the team at DEWALT knocked it out of the park with this one, which is why we have awarded it a rating of 4.8/5

In terms of bang for your buck, you just cannot beat this impact driver.

It’s industry leading in its power and weight, and comes in an affordable and compact package.

Because of this how much we liked this dewalt impact driver, we have decided to rank it at #1 on our Best Impact Driver 2017 list.
